Industrial Noise

Noise from industrial premises has the potential to cause disturbance to nearby noise sensitive locations leading to complaints. A noise survey and assessment in normally required at the planning stage however the addition of new machinery and processes can often require an updated assessment. For industrial premises a survey and assessment is normally carried out in accordance with British Standard 4142: ‘Method for rating industrial noise affecting mixed residential and industrial areas’.

A noise survey is carried out at the nearby noise sensitive premises to the proposed location of the industrial noise source to establish the existing noise levels. The proposed industrial noise source(s) is then compared to the existing noise levels. BS 4142 provides a method for assessing whether the proposed industrial noise source to is likely to give rise to complaints from people residing in the building.

The standard is not suitable for assessing the noise measured inside buildings or when the background and rating noise levels are both very low. Please see Noise at Work Regulations for assessing internal noise levels in industrial units.

Aran Acoustics carry out noise assessments from industrial noise sources. Please contact us to discuss your project requirements.
